If you know me, you know that I’m a reader. I like to read many books that are industry related, and lots of powerful non-fiction that isn’t. Every now and again, I’ll be posting a review here on the books that I read. The goals is to expose you and open up a line of conversation where we can explore and gain valuable insights.
This month’s book review is a book called Break Your Own Rules, How to Change the Patterns of Thinking That Block Women’s Paths to Power by Jill Flynn, Kathryn Heath, and Mary Davis Holt. Break Your Own Rules challenges women to defy their biological response to situations in the workplace, and introduces a new way of thinking that can help women get ahead and live up to their full potential. In event planning, women have the advantage of dominating the industry, however they continue to take a back seat to men when it comes to salary, and some recognition efforts. Although our industry has responded quite well in ensuring that women are well represented on lists like “25 Most Influential People in the Meetings Industry“, it isn’t always the case. Every now and again, the issue still arises.
Some of my key takeaways from this book are:
- Ask for what you want! Don’t just think the world is going to be fair.
- Don’t wait for permission. Be bold and break a few rules.
- Project your personal power. Don’t fly under the radar – be a game changer.
- Learn to be good at sales. Selling and influencing is crucial in every position.
- Use strong, decisive language to show your assertiveness and opinion. Don’t leave people guessing at your opinion.
- Be politically savvy. Know your company and who can get things done. Be knowledgeable of internal and external process.
Those are just a few of my takeaways from this book. They actually can be applicable to men or women. It’s a pretty quick read, and had lots of information and advice. What I found insightful was how the book really pointed out how some of the common characteristics of women, can get you overlooked. In short, Break Your Own Rules looks to help you reach your full potential by changing your thought process. Here is the chapter outline which sheds light on the subject matter.
